What is ELDT?

The Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rule is a set of federal training requirements established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that went into effect on February 7, 2022. These regulations are designed to ensure new commercial drivers are properly trained and qualified before obtaining certain types of CDLs or endorsements.

ELDT sets a national baseline for the training of:

  • First-time Class A CDL applicants

  • First-time Class B CDL applicants

  • Drivers upgrading from Class B to Class A

  • Drivers seeking passenger, school bus, or hazmat endorsements

Only schools and providers listed on the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR) are authorized to deliver ELDT instruction. Smart CDL Academy is a registered provider, offering certified ELDT programs in Texas.

Who Needs ELDT Training?

You need to complete an FMCSA-compliant ELDT program if any of the following applies to you:

✅ You’re applying for a CDL for the first time:

  • Class A or Class B CDL

  • You must complete ELDT before taking the CDL skills test.

✅ You’re upgrading your existing CDL:

  • From Class B to Class A

✅ You’re adding an endorsement to your license:

  • H – Hazardous Materials

  • P – Passenger

  • S – School Bus

If you’re unsure whether ELDT applies to you, our team at Smart CDL Academy can help assess your situation and recommend the right program path.

What’s Included in Our ELDT Curriculum?

The ELDT curriculum is divided into two essential components:

1. Theory Instruction (Classroom or Online)

The theory portion of ELDT focuses on essential knowledge areas such as:

  • Basic operation (pre-trip inspections, shifting, backing, etc.)

  • Safe operating procedures (turning, braking, space management)

  • Advanced operating practices (night driving, extreme weather)

  • Vehicle systems and reporting malfunctions

  • Non-driving activities (trip planning, hours of service, cargo handling)

  • Compliance & regulations (DOT, FMCSA rules, drug/alcohol policies)

Smart CDL Academy offers flexible theory learning options, including in-person and online modules, to accommodate your schedule.

2. Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Training

Once you’ve completed the theory section, you’ll move on to hands-on driving instruction with a certified CDL instructor. This includes:

  • Range training: Backing, shifting, coupling, uncoupling, and pre-trip inspections

  • Public road driving: Real-world operation on highways, rural roads, urban streets, and more

BTW instruction does not have a minimum hour requirement, but Smart CDL Academy ensures you gain the confidence and skills to pass your CDL test and become a safe, professional driver.

How the Certification Process Works

At Smart CDL Academy, we make the ELDT process seamless and efficient. Here’s what the certification journey looks like:

🔹 Step 1: Enroll in an ELDT Program

Choose your license or endorsement type, and we’ll match you with the correct ELDT curriculum. Flexible class start dates are available.

🔹 Step 2: Complete Theory Training

Finish your classroom or online modules at your pace. You’ll need to score at least 80% on each assessment to pass.

🔹 Step 3: Begin Behind-the-Wheel Training

Once you pass the theory portion, you’ll begin range and road instruction with one of our certified instructors.

🔹 Step 4: Certification Submission

After successful completion of the ELDT program, Smart CDL Academy will electronically submit your results to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

🔹 Step 5: Take Your CDL Skills or Endorsement Test

Once FMCSA confirms your ELDT training is complete, you’ll be eligible to schedule your official CDL skills or knowledge test at the DMV.
