What the Doubles/Triples (T) CDL Endorsement Authorizes

This federal qualification is added to an existing Class A CDL and authorizes you to pull double trailers — two separate trailers connected in sequence — and triple trailers — three trailers connected in sequence. In Texas, doubles are common on highways and in urban freight networks, while triples are restricted to certain designated routes and are far less prevalent in day-to-day operations.

This credential is available exclusively to Class A CDL holders. The multi-trailer combination operations it covers are outside the scope of Class B licensing.

Hold a Class B CDL? This endorsement is not available for your license class. Explore other CDL endorsements available to Class B holders, or learn about earning your Class A CDL.

Like the Tanker endorsement, T requires only a written knowledge exam — no background check, no additional road test. It expands the range of Class A combination vehicles you are qualified to operate.

Operating longer combination configurations requires the T endorsement, depending on the vehicle configuration and applicable requirements.

Adding the T Endorsement to Your Class A CDL — One Step

One step — pass the exam. No background check. No road test.

The Texas DPS Written Knowledge Exam

Administered by Texas DPS. The exam covers the following topics specific to multi-trailer operations:

  • Coupling and uncoupling procedures: the specific sequence for connecting trailers via converter dollies, inspecting fifth wheels between trailers, safety chains, air hose connections, and rear trailer lighting
  • Inspecting the full combination vehicle: unique inspection points for doubles and triples beyond a standard pre-trip — including the converter dolly and connections between each unit
  • Handling characteristics: the counterintuitive dynamics of multi-trailer turning and emergency maneuvering that the dedicated technical section below covers in depth
  • Federal and Texas length and weight regulations for double and triple configurations — limits that vary by road type and state

After passing: "T" is added to your CDL. Timing depends on Texas DPS processing.

What Every Multi-Trailer Driver Must Understand — the Handling Dynamics That Define This Exam

Off-Tracking

When a double trailer combination makes a turn, the rear trailer does not follow the same arc as the front vehicle — it cuts inward. This off-tracking means objects that appear clear in the driver's mirrors can be struck by the second trailer during the turn. Class A drivers moving from single-trailer to multi-trailer operations must compensate with wider turns and continuous mirror monitoring throughout each maneuver.

The degree of off-tracking increases with each additional trailer in the combination — making it more pronounced in doubles than in standard tractor-trailer rigs, and significantly more severe in triples.

Rearward Amplification

Any steering input travels backward through each successive trailer, growing in intensity — a dynamic the industry refers to as rearward amplification, or informally as the "crack-the-whip" effect. A sharp swerve that a standard tractor-trailer absorbs without incident can produce a severe whipping action in the last trailer of a tandem configuration.

The appropriate response — which the exam specifically tests — is to avoid sudden counter-steering inputs that would amplify the motion further. Uncontrolled amplification can result in jackknifing the rear trailer.

Both concepts are heavily tested on the exam. Smart CDL Academy's preparation covers them with the depth that the real test demands.

Multi-Trailer CDL Careers in DFW and the Texas Freight Market

28-foot double trailer configurations may be used on urban and suburban delivery routes. Operating them requires the multi-trailer qualification.

Less-than-truckload freight carriers operating out of regional distribution terminals also dispatch loads using tandem configurations on Texas routes. AllianceTexas in North Fort Worth is home to major logistics carriers that include T-qualified routes in their Class A fleet operations.

Long-haul carriers operating the I-35, I-20, and I-30 freight corridors to West Texas and beyond may employ Class A drivers qualified for double configurations.

Class A drivers with the T endorsement typically have access to a broader range of carrier routes and assignments than unendorsed holders. Available routes, assignments and pay vary by employer, role, location, experience and market conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions — T CDL Endorsement

What does the Doubles/Triples endorsement allow me to do?

It authorizes you to pull two trailers connected in sequence (doubles) and three in sequence (triples) legally. This qualification is required by parcel, LTL, and freight carriers that dispatch multi-trailer Class A loads.

Is the T endorsement only available to Class A CDL holders?

Yes — this credential requires an existing Class A CDL. Class B license holders are not eligible. It applies specifically to combination vehicle operations that Class B does not cover.

Does this endorsement require a CDL skills test?

No. Only a written knowledge exam is required — no additional road test, no background check.

Why does the exam test how the rear trailer tracks through turns?

It occurs when the rear trailer of a doubles configuration takes a different arc through a turn than the front vehicle — cutting the corner inward. Drivers must compensate with wider turns and constant mirror awareness. The exam covers it because it is the leading handling difference from single-trailer driving.

What is the crack-the-whip effect and why does it matter?

It is the phenomenon where steering inputs are multiplied through each successive trailer. A movement absorbed by a standard tractor-trailer can produce significant sway in the last trailer of a doubles combination. The exam tests the appropriate response: avoid sudden counter-steering that would worsen the motion.

What CDL jobs use multi-trailer configurations in the Metroplex?

Parcel carriers, LTL freight operators and distribution center fleets throughout the region use multi-trailer configurations. AllianceTexas logistics carriers and I-35 corridor freight operators also run T-qualified routes regularly.
