Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a CDL in Texas

The 5 Steps to Your Texas Commercial Driver's License

We have broken down the entire journey into five clear, manageable steps.

1

Meet the Basic Requirements

Before you can begin, you must be eligible. This is the foundation of your application.

2

Choose the Right License for Your Career Goals

The type of license you get determines the trucks you can drive and the jobs you can get. This is a crucial decision.

Class A CDL

A Class A CDL is required for many tractor-trailer, long-haul, and regional driving roles.

Class B CDL

For local commercial driving roles. These roles can involve local or dedicated routes, depending on the employer and position.

3

  • Your training must be from a provider on the FMCSA's official registry.
  • Smart CDL Academy is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry for Class A and Class B ELDT. All our training programs are fully compliant.
